Under 12s Wildcats Match Reports, 2008-9

Stanley Wildcats U12s 24 v Walton Warriors U12s 8
07.03.09

After an outstanding performance from the Wildcats last week the same would be required to overcome title favourites Walton Warriors. Another tough encounter was expected and this is exactly what the spectators witnessed.. It was Walton who started the brighter with some open passing rugby and they were rewarded early with a score out on the Wildcats left. The conversion was missed and yet again the Wildcats conceded the first score in the game as is now becoming customary.

Again as last week the Wildcats did not panic and were quick to respond with some great defence and the very first time they had ball they scored with an outstanding flowing move across the Walton left and it was Jack Taylor that took the ball across the line for the first try for the Wildcats. The conversion was missed leaving the scores level.

This gave the Wildcats renewed confidence and they struck again very quickly through loose forward Frank Mulhern with an excellent solo effort. Jacob Unwin tagged on the 2 points to give the hosts a healthy lead. After some excellent defence again it was the Wildcats that scored the next try through hooker and leading scorer Jack Pemberton with try number 15 of the season for him. That was the end of the scoring in the first half with the hosts deserved leaders.

Half time - Stanley Wildcats 14 v 4 Walton Warriors.

The second half started with more ferocious defence from both teams and it was the Wildcats that started the brighter with their fourth try, and his second, through the excellent Frank Mulhern with a mazy run that saw him beat most of the Walton defence. The conversion was again successful from Jacob Unwin.

The next action of the game saw the visitors reduced to 12 men after a professional foul on hooker Jack Pemberton which ended his game for the day. This should have given the Wildcats a further advantage but credit to Walton as they dug deep and battled well and turned in some excellent defence. With the Wildcats very effective in their own defence the game evened out for a long spell.

This was broken with a well worked try from full back Dominic Dorgan and again the conversion was missed. With the end of the game close it was the visitors that scored the final try after some indiscipline from the Wildcats gave Walton the platform to end the scoring with a try from close in. The conversion was missed.

Overall an outstanding game of rugby and credit to both teams for a very strong and physical game.
